Rye: The Great American Cocktail, and Don Draper’s drink of choice

Like many of you, we are tuning in to the second season of Mad Men — AMC’s drama set in the 1960s and centered around the offices of Sterling Cooper, a fictional advertising agency. Of course we love it that the show’s main character, Don Draper, is a fan of the great American cocktail: Rye whiskey. We’ve seen him drink it straight, on the rocks, and in an Old-Fashioned.
We know how Don drinks his rye, but how do you take yours? On Tuesday we posed this question to our friends on Twitter, and here are just a few of their responses:
CourtneeCee: On the rocks…the rocks never tasted so good.
GeneralRed: on the rocks, but also with sweet vermouth for a rye manhattan…the way they make it at the Royal Mile (no cherries)
mikejcorey: In a Manhattan. Cosmo Lounge in downtown DM makes a great one with it.
Let’s keep this conversation going. Readers: How do you drink your TR? Please add your responses to the comments area below.

I have been loving the Frisco (rye, benedictine, lemon juice).

TR is too good to mix. On the rock in a low ball, the only way to drink it.

On the rocks, occasionally a Manhattan, and sometimes with ginger beer. 1/3 (or more) Templeton on the rocks topped off with ginger beer.

I like my whiskey neat. I don’t like to impart anything into the flavor of the whiskey I’m enjoying, and with Templeton Rye - that flavor is unique and complex. When I’m in the mood for some extra smooth whiskey enjoyment, though, Templeton Rye on the rocks is so easily drinkable…but retains that wonderful characteristic that I’m sure made Scarface one happy mobster.

TR on the rocks is great but also enjoy it with either a sour mix or Squirt!

You know what whiskey over ice does?
Ruins perfectly good ice!

I respect those that drink TR straight on the rocks, it is very smooth and enjoyable that way.
However, I have learned to enjoy it as a TR Seven Press.
In a 12 ounce glass full of ice (part cubed/part crushed) add two shots of TR and fill remainder of glass with equal amounts of water and 7-Up.
Great drink!

Neat in a rocks glass,
with a glass bottle of Coca Cola around, just in case

TR makes an excellent Sazerac.
